Screen Prints

Photobucket

I hope everyone had a nice New Year! Mine was pretty low-key, involving friends, two good movies (well, one wonderfully bad '80s horror flick--"The Stuff"--and one genuinely good film, "American Beauty"), and homemade macaroni and cheese. I'm not much of a New Years Eve person, so it was just right. Anyway, I thought I'd share the screen prints I've been working on this past school year! I'm currently in an advanced printmaking class right now, since I've done a lot of other printmaking, but this has been my first time doing screen printing! My primary interest has been in collage, but I thought I'd try my hand at incorporating illustration into my screen prints, as well. This past semester has really been my first foray into the land of illustration, and I'm really enjoying it! It's a lot harder than I thought it'd be to come up with characters and images, maybe because I think the best ones are those that are less constrained and realistic and kind of crazy. I can get pretty hyper critical of my work, which has proven to be a difficult vice to have, given its ability to freeze me from making things--especially things that require me to just be more uninhibited! But, I've been trying to work on it, keeping little sketchbooks and journals to doodle in during dull moments or spurts of inspiration. Additionally, I've also begun incorporating words with my images, drawing from old one to two line journal entries I've kept over the years. A lot of them have been little musings and observations, and pretty centrally involved with my favorite subject: human nature. I think I'm going to continue with this next semester and see where it takes me--because of it I've gotten really interested in typography, too! Registration has probably been the most frustrating of the processes, but I'm excited to keep practicing and learning and continue with screen printing through out the new year!

PS: I recently made a Cargo Collective website with all of my artwork, if you'd like to check it out! There are still things that need to be put up, re-photographed, etc., but it's a start!

Oh my gosh Jessica, these are so wonderful! You have such a talent for screen printing! I once made a linoleum print of Marguerite Clark and it was probably the most tedious and time consuming thing I've ever done. I hope you sell prints/copies of them!!

Happy New Year! My new year's eve was spent the same way - watching bad movies and taking it easy with my family!

Meanwhile, these are all incredible!

these are AWESOME. seriously. And I'm in design school so I'm supposed to know what I'm talking about...

I've always wanted to learn how to print but never found the time. you should put them on t-shirts! they'd be so sweet.

I know what you mean about the whole self-deprecation thing. Everyone suffers from it. I'm always so harsh on my drawings from reality that sometimes it prevents me from doing good work.

by the way, I'm your newest follower :)

Katherine- Aww, shucks!! Yer the nicest! Thanks so much! haha and linoleum is super meticulous! I bet it came out great, though! And prints--maybe this summer! I have to see!

Kailey- Likewise! And thank you!!

Rachel- Aw, thanks so much! You should!!!

taylor- Ahh, thanks a ton!! That means a lot!! I'm glad you like them! And t-shirts would be cool! Matching them up on the fabric is even harder, though...haha Oh the printing woes! And likewise...I guess it's something almost everyone who makes things suffers from! We're always are worst critics!
